Have you ever wondered what president hosted his daughter’s prom at the white house?
There are several candidates that have hosted such events and many other people have attended them as well.
So it’s no wonder that there are a number of articles out there about the subject. Some of the names that have been mentioned include:
Jack Ford, Michelle Obama, and even former Presidents Bush and Gerald Ford.
Susan Ford Bales
Susan Ford Bales was born in Washington DC on July 6, 1957.
She is the youngest child of former President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady Betty Ford. Before she went to the White House, she was a student at Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland.
The first time that she ever entered the White House was when her father became President.
He served as Vice-President until August 1974, when he was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States.
After his term, the Fords moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. They had two daughters, Heather and Tyne.
Susan Ford attended her prom at the White House in 1975. A few years later, she co-authored a book about her experiences called Double Exposure:
A First Daughter Mystery with Laura Hayden.
When Susan was a teenager, she had a longtime boyfriend named Gardner Britt. He was a pre-med student at Washington & Lee University.
But he broke up with her over the Equal Rights Amendment.
Her father remarried a lawyer named Vaden Bales. In 1989, the couple moved to Albuquerque, New Mexican.
However, in 2009, they returned to their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She has been a national spokesperson since 1984. Her career includes working with Newsweek and the Omaha Sun. Besides writing, she has also been a breast cancer advocate.
In the fall of 2013, she delivered remarks at the unveiling of a commemorative stamp honoring Gerald R. Ford.
This was one of several events she has held for the Ford family in honor of her parents.
The night began with a ceremony on the South Lawn. A tree was planted there and Melania Trump recognized the groundskeeper for his work during her father’s administration.
One of the most unique high school proms ever held took place at the White House in 1975. It was hosted by Susan Ford, the youngest daughter of President Gerald R. Ford.
The event was held in the East Room of the White House.
This was the first time that a high school student’s prom was ever held at the famous landmark. Over 70 teenage girls and dates attended the event.
As part of the event, attendees were asked to provide their birthdates and Social Security numbers for Secret Service review.
After this, they were served refreshments in the State Dining Room.
These included a miniature quiche lorraine and Swedish meatballs.
While most people commute to work every day, the Ford family lived in the White House for ten days straight.
The family was surrounded by security cameras, surveillance equipment, and a team of Secret Service agents.
For the first time in history, a senior prom was hosted at the White House. Students from Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, raised funds for the event over the course of several years.
During the night, participants danced to live music, played the bump, and sipped on a non-alcoholic punch. The White House Press Corps covered the event.
Although the Fords lost the 1976 presidential election, the event was a success. A committee of students and staff at the all-girls school paid for the event with bake sales and fundraisers.
Although not the most impressive high school prom in history, the Holton-Arms School Senior Prom was certainly a milestone in prom history.
Some of the participants were even able to cruise on the president’s yacht.
Barack and Michelle Obama were at the White House for a special night: their daughter Malia’s first prom.
The event was held in the East Room and included refreshments. It lasted from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
The two were joined by former Cabinet members. Among them were Education Secretary Arn Duncan, former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, and former HHS secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
Also at the party were current US ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel and former senior adviser David Axelrod.
After the festivities were over, the party went to the White House’s State Dining Room for refreshments.
Some of the food on offer included miniature quiche lorraine, Swedish meatballs, and punch.
Malia’s prom was a big deal because she was the first daughter to attend. She has also been in the news for her dating exploits. Sasha, her 17-year-old sister, has also been in the spotlight.
Michelle Obama is a former first lady and best-selling author. Her memoir Becoming is now available. In it, she describes her life growing up in the White House.
Michelle’s prom story sounds like something you’d see in a Disney movie. For instance, she got to be a prom date to a guy named Chris Milton.
During the first date, Michelle felt charmed set in. And when the time came to say goodbye, she had to jump through hoops.
The first lady was also tasked with arranging a first kiss for her eighth-grade crush. However, she narrated the process with a little bit of humor.
While Michelle and Barack had an excellent time at the event, Malia’s date had a more stressful evening. Despite being allowed to travel in a Secret Service vehicle, she was followed all night.
When President Gerald Ford was still in office, his daughter, Susan Ford, hosted a high school prom at the White House.
This was the first time in the history of the White House that a senior prom was held there.
The event was a big deal, and it was a fun evening.
It was hosted at the East Room of the White House, which was filled with over 70 teenage girls and their dates.
The festivities were overflowing with hors d’oeuvres, Swedish meatballs, and a mini quiche Lorraine. But the most important part of the evening was the dance.
At 8:00 p.m., the Outerspace Band played the best songs for the occasion. A Secret Service agent was present to supervise.
Besides the dance, there was a cruise on the presidential yacht, an award for the best dress, and a visit to the Secret Service Office.
Guests were asked to provide their social security numbers, birthdates, and their names for review.
There was no photo of the evening’s most impressive feat. In fact, a photographer was in the Grand Hall for the first 20 minutes, but he did not get to see it.
The most expensive thing about the event was the white lace dress that Janet Ford wore. The least expensive was the hors d’oeuvres, which cost a mere $20.
It was a rite of passage for many teens. For some, it is a fun experience that will last a lifetime. However, for others, it is a night they will not soon forget.
