C.S. Lewis was one of J.R.R Tolkien's closest friends. They were fellow members of an informal society called The Inklings and greatly impacted one another's literary efforts, though their styles were quite different. Tolkien once said that The Lord of the Rings would have never been published without the encouragement of C.S. Lewis. In December 2005, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the most well-known of Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, will be released in theaters. This book is a compilation of poems printed in various publications from throughout his lifetime. Some of these poems express thoughts which Lewis later developed further in the Chronicles of Narnia. “Narnian Suite,” “The True Nature of Gnomes,” and “The Salamander” are suggested reading for Further Up and Further In.
